How males deal with feminists

From the article:

“Most of the guys hadn’t spoken in class all semester; today, all did. A number of the women in class were eager to ask questions and create dialogue; up until this week, mine has been the only consistent male voice in the classroom. The guys did a great job of sharing about many topics (we spent a lot of time on the “myth of male weakness”) But two of the guys did something that I see over and over again from men in women’s studies classes. They prefaced their remarks by joking “I know I’m going to get killed for saying this, but…” One of them, even pretended to rise from his desk to position himself by the door, saying that “Once I say this, I know I’m going to have to make a run for it.” Most of the women laughed indulgently, and I even found myself grinning along.”

Really a fascinating read.  Check out the whole article here.

Do you love math? Hate it? Are you a teacher? Were you ever a student? Then read this article!

“Teaching is not about information. It’s about having an honest intellectual relationship with your students. It requires no method, no tools, and no training. Just the ability to be real. And if you can’t be real, then you have no right to inflict yourself upon innocent children.”

My Own Version of March Madness

Here’s a list of things I have to do in the next couple weeks (in addition to the normal thirty hour work week, going to class, working on my thesis, and skating):

  • Write a 2,500 word travel piece
  • Edit a 3,000 word short story for a graduating students magazine (I stayed up till 3 AM this morning writing it)
  • Cut out another page and a half from my reading selection for Friday and then rehearse
  • Find and apply to teaching jobs for next year
    • Revamp my resume
    • Write Cover letters
    • Find people to write me recommendations
  • Do my taxes
  • Edit an acting reel for a friend
  • Figure out what’s going on with my security deposit, possibly file a claim in small claims court
  • Figure out what the heck I’m going to do to pay my bills this summer
  • Finish an overdue birthday gift for a friend

Bring it.

I don’t think this was meant for me…

I have a few friends/acquaintances who must have other people in their phonebooks named Kelly (or something very similar) because I occasionally get messages from them that are definitely not intended for me. Most of the time these are innocuous little things, but last night I got a particularly delightful/awkward one:

“I can’t talk much now but he was really nice–a really good guy.  I’m just so messed up I want steve*. How r u? Love ya, Jenn*”

Sharing personal details accidentally is always embarassing, but this particular text came from the mother of a couple girls I tutor for.  Several years ago, she and her husband were divorced and she has been dating other men.  I don’t remember if “steve*” is her ex-husband’s name or not…

Usually I respond and tell the person that they contacted the wrong person.  This time, however, I felt being irresponsible would be slightly more appreciated.

*not their real names.
